The Utah Procurement Code provides that a procurement may be made without competition when the University determines that there is only one source that can reasonably meet the University’s need for the required supply or service, as described in Utah Code Ann. § 63G-6a-802.

The Purchasing Department has received the following request for sole source procurement:

Product and/or Service to be purchased: Aurora Scientific Muscle Contraction Apparatus
Sole Source Supplier: Aurora Scientific
Earliest Proposed Purchase Date: February 9, 2024
Buyer Name: Jon Pezely
Sole Source Justification:

Aurora Scientific produces the gold-standard apparatus to measure force-generating capacity of murine skeletal muscle. While there are other companies that produce instruments that has the ability to measure murine muscle force, Aurora apparatus is the only instrument that allows for the measurements of force during isokinetic and/or eccentric contraction.

We currently utilize the Aurora instruments, and we need to purchase additional units to increase our capacity. In order for the measurements to be comparable, we need to purchase the same instruments from Aurora.

We are aware of other companies that make similar instruments, but none of them allow for isokinetic or eccentric contraction. They also produce data that are not directly comparable to data that we currently generate with our Aurora instruments.
